A Cathedral of Colors:
Hermann Nitsch’s 56th Painting Action at the Museum Center Mistelbach/Austria
The Biggest so Far
Opening: May 30, 2009
Hermann Nitsch will enter a new dimension of his artistic activities in May of 2009 at the museum dedicated to him in Mistelbach/Lower Austria. The centerpiece will be his 56th Painting Action, which opens on May 30, 2009 at the Hermann Nitsch Museum in Mistelbach. This will be the largest and most comprehensive painting action to date by the internationally acclaimed artist.
During this painting action, which will be open to the public from May 13 to 17, Nitsch will create a “Cathedral of Colors”, on view from June 2009 to March 2010 at the Hermann Nitsch Museum. During the 56th PAINTING ACTION, the spectrum of colors in Hermann Nitsch’s palette will expand to reach new dimensions: “Like the old masters, I will explore the light spectrum of color,” Hermann Nitsch declares.
The oeuvre of Hermann Nitsch, one of the most renowned and most controversially discussed artists, is represented in the most important collections of the world. He was one of the major protagonists of Viennese actionism. Having initiated the idea of “Orgien Mysterien Theater” (Orgy Mystery Theater) and informal action painting, he is one of the very few Austrian artists to have contributed in a major way to the development of world art after the disasters of the world wars. He is also one of the few contemporary artists to display a profound interest in questions of religion, ritual and mythology in his oeuvre. During the past year, a museum dedicated to Hermann Nitsch’s work was opened in Naples.
